Today, more patients ask us for white fillings because they want their teeth to look natural when they laugh, talk and smile without the appearance of dark coloured fillings. White fillings are available as tooth coloured resin or porcelain. They are used to re-establish the natural appearance of a decayed or previously filled tooth.
Tooth coloured resin, or composite works really well in smaller holes or cavities. However if your cavity is large, or located in a heavy chewing area, then a porcelain filling, or crown would provide superior strength and be a more suitable option.
White fillings, like other dental materials, may require periodic replacement. If not kept clean with daily brushing and flossing, the bonded adhesive layer of the filling may de-bond creating a microscopic gap for bacteria can re-infect the tooth between the filling and the enamel and eventually may cause decay. It is therefore, very important to see your dentist for regular dental check-ups because they allow us to detect a problem in the early stage with periodic X-rays
Your dentist will advise you on the most suitable type of filling for you, depending on how big the restoration is, whether it is in a visible part of the mouth and cost.
Ceramic Inlay Fillings
Ceramic Inlay fillings are the strongest most durable options for filling teeth. Whilst composite fillings are made of resin which undergo shrinkage during curing and placement, ceramic filling are made in a dental laboratory in a blast furnace oven. This creates a filling that is harder than the surrounding tooth structure. As such, ceramic fillings offer additional support to the tooth that the inlay is cemented into. Ceramic Inlays/ Onlays cost three times as much as cheaper resin fillings, but remain the ideal treatment for tooth restoration.
